“Life is what you Create.
Start Creating!”
— Brian Scott

I, Brian Scott, grew up on the North and West sides of St. Louis, not far from Union Station and the old Sears building. Even as a kid, I was always creating something. I loved sports, but I could just as easily spend hours drawing street layouts from memory, sketching Looney Tunes characters, or writing poems that came from a place much deeper than people expected from someone my age.

My grandmother, Baby Ruth, would hang my drawings on the kitchen walls, and that meant more to me than I probably understood at the time. I was an honor student throughout school, but creativity was always the thing that made me feel most like myself. Looking back, I can see that the instinct was already there. I was learning how to take something I could see in my mind and make it real enough for someone else to see too.

At 18, I had a decision to make. College was an option, and I had scholarship opportunities from Morehouse College, Harris-Stowe State University, and the University of Missouri. But I also had a child on the way, and I felt a responsibility to build something solid for my family. In 2005, I followed in my father’s footsteps and joined the U.S. Navy, becoming an Aviation Structural Mechanic working on F/A-18 fighter jets. My service took me across Southeast Asia aboard the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and included a tour in Afghanistan.

The pace was demanding, but the creative part of me never disappeared. If I had a laptop, tablet, or a few quiet minutes, I was drawing, building web pages, editing music videos, mixing music, or learning something new. The Navy taught me discipline, accountability, and how to show up when people were depending on me. After eight years of service, I became a medically retired veteran, but aviation remained a major part of my life. What started in uniform grew into more than 20 years of experience across military and commercial aviation, and the discipline I learned there still shapes the way I approach every client, every idea, and every piece of work I put my name on.

Living in San Diego for more than 18 years gave me room to grow, not just professionally, but creatively too. By that point, I had earned my B.A. in Business Management from the University of Phoenix in 2018 and my M.S. in Aeronautics in 2020, while continuing to build my career in aviation. But the real turning point came when I stepped into the food industry through my meal prep business, Balanced Meals, LLC. That business pushed me to learn how to market for myself. I taught myself how to build websites, create flyers, design business cards, understand SEO, and bring ideas to life in a way people could actually connect with.

The more I learned, the more I realized this was bigger than one business. It was a gift I could use to help other people build something real for themselves too. That is what led me to start Black Excellence, LLC, now B.X. Marketing, with a vision to empower, connect, and elevate people of color through business, design, and strategy. I love helping people take an idea from the ground up and turn it into something clear, strong, and built to grow. That is why my motto is, “Life is what you create. Start Creating!” because at some point, your life is in your hands, and you have the power to shape it, but it all begins when you decide to start.
